Below you will find highlights from various book promotions, book report ideas, book projects, and the genrefication of my library, both fiction and nonfiction
Plot Scratch: Find Your Next Favorite Read!
So I was trolling through Amazon one day when I came across this "game" called Plot Twist. The basic idea is that there's teaser information for the book on the card and then you scratch off the center to see the book it's describing. When I saw this I said to myself, "I betcha I could create something like this for my library! So I bought some scratch off stickers and ta-da! I created Plot Scratch. All of them are color coordinated for the different genres in my library. A couple of ways I used AI to create these. . . .

Shelf Talkers
Everybody loves a good shelf talker! But who has the time to make them all and make sure they're all switched out when a book is taken?! Now, you do! I got this GREAT hack from Kelsey Bogan at Don't Shush Me! I've made about 6 for each section in each genre. I put two out and then put the extras in a little card holder on the bottom shelf. I'm going to have my TAs check for when there's not a faced out book and change it out for me! I also came up with a great hack for cheap and easy shelf talker holders! I used plastic index card holders! They were self adhesive, and I just cut them a little to size, but it will be super easy to change things out now! No tape required! You will find ALL the shelf talkers I created below. The number of them varies depending on how large each of my sections are, but hopefully you will find these a good jumping off place! I recommend downloading as a .pdf and then printing "Multiple" on each page. I did 3 per page. PRINTABLES/RESOURCES

Books of the Year Newsletter
Every winter, I like to share with the staff what my favorite books of the past year have been. Staff love to see it to give them ideas of what to read during winter break or what gifts to give others. I also love to feature links to local independent bookstores to buy the books. Book Circles
I created these book circles to add to my book talk template to give students the "vibes" of a book at a glance. There are over 50 of them total and it continues to grow! PRINTABLES/RESOURCES Get the Canva template HERE |
Book Talk Organization Chart
I use this Google Sheet to organize what books I'll be talking about with my English classes. I talk about unique books in each class, so this chart allows me to see what I've talked about in the past with those classes. Feel free to make a copy and edit as you see fit! Book in a Flash
This is a TikTok trend that we're bringing into the classroom. You compile pictures that embody the aesthetic of the book. If you were to get a feel for the book "in a flash," what would it look and sound like? In addition to this, students have to do a closer analysis of four pictures they used in the video. You can see an example in the presentation. Get a copy of the presentation HERE |
Game of Quotes
This is definitely not of my own invention, but it's a fun game to play during silent reading to keep students engaged and actually reading! This idea originally came from The Book Sommelier who took it from a game called BYOB. You can get a copy of my version of the presentation HERE Teachers and students both loved it! |
Book Speed Dating
Lots of librarians already do book speed dating, but if you don't or want to jazz yours up a bit, here are some templates to accomplish it! Book Speed Dating is when you pull a bunch of books, put them on tables in a pile, and let students randomly choose a book to go on a "date" with. You can see the presentation guide HERE You can access the student handout HERE |
Virtual Book Tasting
A Book Tasting is pretty much the same thing as book speed dating, just went a different theme. However, during distance learning, I put together a virtual book tasting. You can see my end result HERE. Linked here is a template for you to use. You add in whatever books you wish and link it to any books talks you have recorded or book trailers. Destiny Custom Icons
To coordinate with my genrefication of fiction and nonfiction, I wanted to customize my icons in Destiny Discover. Here's how I did it! Check out my 3 minute tutorial HERE |
Genrefication of Nonfiction
I went through the journey of genrefication with my nonfiction collection during the 2016-2017 school year. It began with major weeding of nonfiction and eventually labeling every single nonfiction book and placing them into various categories. I chronicled my journey through a series of blog posts. You can read them below. PRINTABLES/RESOURCES |
